Sketch cards

NYCC Sketch Cards by ~Dunlavey on deviantART

So at this past weekend's New York Comic Con I decided to try doing sketch cards, all done with markers. It was a lot of fun and filled what little spare time I had when I wasn't selling comics, chatting with fans and getting interviewed for podcasts. I sold them for 2 bucks a pop or gave them away to nice customers who liked them. I think I did thirty or so the whole weekend - these are the ones that were left over at the end of the show. Some of the other ones I remember doing: The Wonder Twins, Modok, Iron Man (several), Hulk Hogan (special request), Godzilla (which got STOLEN), The Baroness (also stolen), and probably some more.

All these cards are for sale at my Comicspace gallery for just $2 each - such a deal! I'm going to do a lot more, so if you've got a request just post it in the comments here or send me a note or an email and I'll have it in my comicspace gallery eventually.

Rejected Batman sketches!

I found a whole bunch more sketches to share with you!

Remember all those "Worst Case Scenario" handbooks from a few years back? Twords the tail end of that trend a Batman Handbook was released and Wizard decided to do an article on it, accompanied by several fake rejected entries from the book, which I illustrated. Three of them made it to print, but I did a whole bunch during the sketch stage. The color ones are the ones that actually saw print. If these drawings seems kind of stiff to you - you're right. I was attempting to match the drawing style of the actual book.

How to improvise interrogation techniques.

How to get a giant penny inside the Batcave.

I didn't understand this one at all - How to find a trustworthy mute hunchback mechanic.

How to Play Joel Schumacher damage-control.

How to fire your sidekick (this was my favorite one - bummer it didn't get picked for the final).

Here's another Batman-related image from a different job - there was some storyline where Batman's evil son (what?!) beat up Robin, stole his costume, then tried to kill Catwoman's baby (what? WHAT?!!!). On a completely unrelated topic, superhero comics are super-retarded. Anyways, Wizard told me "draw Evil Robin punching a baby in the face" which I thought was a little too violent, so I did some alternative takes that I thought were funnier, but they went with the punching one.

I'll post more if I find anything cool!

Sissy fight!

I was going through my files and I found this rejected sketch for Wizard's "Last Man Standing" feature from a few years back. Last Man Standing is a "who would win in a fight" monthly feature where they pit 2 similar cartoon or comic characters against each other in an imaginary fight, like Superman va Spider-Man or in this case, Sailor Moon vs the Pokemon girl. The editors wanted a more "serious" picture instead which came out fine, but I prefer the funny version.

Illustration for an industry magazine ad for The Sportsman Channel. Both my uncle and my father-in-law are both avid outdoorsmen and gave me a lot of inspiration for this piece.

Commision #2 - Bombshell

Commisioned sketch of this guy's original superhero creation - Bombshell, done with markers on drawing paper. I don't usually draw "cheescake" characters so it was a fun challenge.
